What If Your Favorite Social Media Site Shuts Down?

What would happen if your favorite social media site shuts down? What if Facebook decided to charge you to be on their platform? What if Facebook just shut down? I know what you are thinking It will never happen! Well, to put things in perspective, this recently happened to me with the video platform Blab.

 

For those who don’t know about Blab, it’s similar to video recording platforms like Periscope, Facebook Live and Google Hangout. The cool thing about Blab was four people can get on a live video chat at one time, from all over the globe. After a video recording, Blab would send you the mp4 (video) and mp3 (audio) via email for use.

How cool is that?!

I used Blab to record my Podcasts A Kairos Moment (social media marketing for startup businesses and entrepreneurs) and The Doctor of Love Show (marriage preparation for singles). The system was perfect! Here’s how it worked:

I would find guests for the podcasts (click here to find out how I interviewed more than 100 people and how to find guests) and schedule a certain day of the week to interview my guest. Blab even created a widget and countdown timer you could embed on your website.

-Upload the flyer to Blab so people could subscribe and watch live according to the day scheduled. Those who subscribed to your show would get a notification when you go live.

-I created a custom made flyer for my guests through Canva  (click here to see some of my work). We would share the flyer across social media and the link to subscribe.

-I would record the video live on Blab with my guest, then take the video I received and edit a 3-minute snippet to upload organically to Facebook, take the same video and upload to YouTube.

-Since I’m more of a Podcaster, I took the audio (mp3) and edited through Audacity (with an intro, outro, and commercial slots). When finished I would upload the audio (using Podcasting hosts Spreaker and Libsyn) to all the major Podcasting platforms like iTunes, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, and Google Play.

-I would take the links from the major podcasting platforms and email them to my guests so they can share on their social media platforms, bringing massive exposure for both parties.

That was a smooth system and it worked almost a year. Then it happened. One day I got an inbox from a person I would be interviewing on Blab. She said:

I know you were interviewing me on Blab, but I heard they just shut down.

After receiving the inbox message, I immediately went to Blab to see if it was true. Yep, it happened. Blab was finished. The main platform I used to record Podcasts were shut down. Just like that.

Now what?

I had guests lined up for Blab interviews!  I had to find an alternative quick!




Although I was frustrated there was no time to complain. My Podcasts must go on…even without Blab!

So, what did I do?

I had two choices. Either I could use Skype and a 3rd party app like Pamela (you could record your Skype interview) or use Spreaker recording interface and Skype.

I chose the latter. Why use Spreaker? The interface is easy to use and it gives you a studio-like feel. Using Spreaker gives you the ability to go live and send notifications to your subscribers.

So, if your favorite social media site shuts down, how will you stay in touch with your audience?  Don’t invest all your time and content on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, and Instagram and neglect your website content. The aforementioned social media sites are excellent places to share your message, but social media platforms are equivalent to renting an apartment. Your website is owning a home.

Where do I begin? Why I use Selz for e-commerce for both my businesses The Doctor of Love Show Podcast and Kairos Social Media Marketing?  Selz has everything one could ask for when it comes to promoting your product or service. You can add physical, digital, or services to the items section of your store.

When I first started using e-commerce online was the ever so popular PayPal. I used them for years until I read a blog by Social Media Marketer Ian Cleary of Razor Social on which best e-commerce sites to use for your business. When I saw all the functionalities that Selz offer, I made the switch quick (I’ll discuss the functionalities later).

If you know me, I’m all about the analytics and demographics. If you don’t know where your customers and potential customers are coming from how can you market to them? Are they living on the East Coast? Are they in another country? What social media platforms are they using the most? Where are they finding your content? Selz offer that in each product or service you display on your personalized page. This helps me tremendously so I know where to find my target audience.

I like that Selz are always finding ways to be innovative with their eCommerce site. They send very informative blogs on what’s to come or give you tips and strategies how to be a better marketer using Selz. I usually share their content on my Twitter, Google Plus, and Facebook Like page so others can see what Selz are doing. I can’t believe it happened to my favorite music artist of all time, Prince (Stevie Wonder is running a close second) who passed away April 21, 2016. The music icon passed away too soon at the age of 57. As I look closer into the album that defined his career (plus a movie to go along with it) Purple Rain was released June 19th 1984. With smash hits like Let’s Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, and the song we all remember forever Purple Rain.

What do you remember about Prince? Was it his voice, the sensual song titles, the heels, the guitar, or changing his name to a symbol? To the newer generation, you might say The Dave Chappelle skit. What about the color Purple?  Ah, yes the color Purple will always be synonymous with Prince.

The color and the artist are so tied together when he passed, cities were lighting up their buildings with the color purple to remember The Artist Formally Known As or simply The Purple One.

We all seen the movie Purple Rain, right? When we think about what Prince wore in the movie, all we could think about was the Purple Jacket and White top. The image will be seared in our minds forever. Was Prince a marketing genius back then? You bet.

Throughout Prince music career he wore outfits that would make men think what in the world Prince got on now? Since the song Purple Rain cemented him as one of the all-time greats, no matter the outfit, the color Purple would show up somewhere. Talk about branding…

With so many brands in today’s noisy social media world, what makes you stand out?

-When we think of Prince we think Purple

-When we think Seth Godin we think bald head and Yellow Glasses.

-Whoopi Goldberg and her dreadlocks

-KISS and their makeup

These are just a few examples; the list goes on and on.




Here are a few things I’ve seen that will etch you in the minds of people today

 

-Consistency: How often are people seeing you? Are you creating fresh content on a regular basis? Are you so good at what you do, when people need a service in your niche, they think of you?

-Longevity: Prince been banging hits since the early 80’s. You’ve been posting videos on YouTube for 1 month now and complaining about not getting enough views?

-Color Scheme: Some people are synonymous with certain colors. Do you have a color scheme you stick with? Check out Nina Thomas on how she rocks Pink with everything.  My colors for Kairos Social Media Marketing are the colors of the Seattle Mariners and Seahawks. Whenever I’m Interviewing guests on my Podcast or speaking publicly, the majority of the time I have on those colors.

-People who LOVE your brand: If you are speaking to the hearts of people, they will become an evangelist for your brand. Grandma said what’s from the heart reaches the heart. Your brand should make people feel some kind of way, which they will share with others. Word of mouth and sharing content is the new currency of the social media world.

Whenever I think of Prince singing Purple Rain, I think of people coming together and putting their lighters in the air (or in today’s terms, putting your phone in the air).

How to Get More Views on YouTube kairossocial.comMy name is Deepa Berar (obvy), I’m an Indian girl from Canada and this is my beauty, fashion and lifestyle blog!

So about me…hmm..what can I tell you. Well I’ve been a makeup artist for 9 years, worked in pretty much every part of the industry (film, tv, runway etc) and for pretty much every brand (Mac, Sephora etc). I’ve been a blogger and YouTuber for the past few years and a TV host for the past 2.

I love anything and everything to do with beauty and fashion! My style is inspired by both Hollywood and Bollywood.

Why did I start a blog/youtube channel? Well I’ve got a lot of family. Like a LOT of family. Like 38 first cousins to be exact. Hey, I’m Indian, what do you expect?! I completely believe that your appearance and your confidence are connected. Looking good on the outside can help in so many ways from just simply feeling good about yourself, helping you in your career, to trying new things, making more friends or just igniting that passion inside that will in turn lead you to finding other things that inspire you and make you feel good.

I also believe there are no rules. What you feel good in is what you feel good in. Doesn’t matter if it’s on trend or not.

Gelie Akhenblit (CEO of NetworkedLocal LLC / Founder of NetworkingPhoenix) has revolutionized the way Arizona’s professionals, small business owners, and entrepreneurs network in the Valley. Founded in October 2008, Gelie left her corporate position in order to launch her vision as a tech startup. This startup, NetworkingPhoenix.com, created a democratized platform for local networkers to connect online and in person through mixers, business events,  and local educational partners. Since its inception, NetworkingPhoenix has skyrocketed in popularity and has become one of the most visited websites in Arizona with nearly 35,000 members and growing.

In December of 2013, NetworkedLocal LLC was formed as the parent company for the new nationally (make it also sound local)  focused business, with Chicago being the first market outside of Arizona, making Gelie the CEO of the new national company.
